Blockbuster domestic drama by Fukuko Ishii and Yumie Hiraiwa
Overview
This blockbuster series was produced by Fukuko Ishii and written by Yumie Hiraiwa, who made a great team. It is a TV series that represents the golden age of domestic drama in the 1970s. Hikaru Yomo admires her father who was a policeman who died on duty. Aspiring to join the police force herself, she quits technical college and enrolls in police academy without telling her mother Katsu, who is a nursery teacher. After graduation, she is assigned to Ueno Police Station. There, she nurtures love with Shinya, a detective and childhood friend. From the first to third seasons, Hisano Yamaoka and Kiyoko Suizenji played mother and daughter, and Koji Ishizaka played Hikaru’s love interest. The series portrays their warm interaction and love with family and neighbors in downtown Tokyo through lively dialogue. Even though the theme changed with each season—from policewoman in the first and nurse in the second to fish store in the third—the cast remained the same. In the fourth season themed around a curry shop, Masako Kyozuka and Naomi Sagara played mother and daughter. The series’ peak audience rating was 56.3%, which is the highest ever audience rating for a commercial broadcasting station TV series.
