Overview
The story is set in the Kyoho era (1716–36) of the Edo period. Hiraga Gennai (Takashi Yamaguchi) is an inventor and polymath who, together with unique characters such as Ukyonosuke Ono (Ryuzo Hayashi), Inabakozo Shinsuke (Tsukasa Masaaki), Beni (Ryoko Nakano), Hachiman (Takao Yamada), Sugita Genpaku (Kyu Sakamoto), and Maeno Ryotaku (Taketoshi Naito), solves the various problems and difficult cases that are presented before him by leveraging the new knowledge and unique creativity he has acquired in Nagasaki. Although the series is a jidaigeki (period drama) Gennai, who has finished his studies in Nagasaki, is often portrayed in a modern setting with his companions, such as walking in the Ginza district’s pedestrian precinct in modern Tokyo. Moreover, the series covers modern topics such as the garbage problem and fiercely competitive entrance examinations, and also includes an episode where then Tokyo Governor Ryokichi Minobe makes a guest appearance. This original screenplay and staging garnered a lot of attention, helping the series to achieve an average audience raring of around 30%. Won the 19th Galaxy Award for program highly recommended at the Broadcast Critics Awards (Galaxy Awards), and the Excellent Program Award in the TV Awards.
