Overview
Hyogoro is an old man who works at the fish market in Tsukudajima, Tokyo. As he lives alone, he lends out the second floor of his house. The tenant who moves in is called Shoji, a long-haired hippy wearing sunglasses, and he begins a self-indulgent life there. A man of the old school, Hyogoro chastises Shoji about his messy room and appearance, but this falls to deaf ears. Shoji even lets a friend live with him without Hyogoro’s permission. Soon, however, Hyogoro and Shoji realize their similarities, such as how they easily get worked up, and begin to recognize one another. Once Shoji and his friend leave and a sincere office worker moves in as a tenant, Hyogoro starts to miss them, recalling how they used to get worked up about everything. The TV drama captures the universal aspects among people through differences in life style and fashion. Taichi Yamada later created a drama series, Otokotachi no Tabiji (1976-81), revolving around the same theme of generational differences.
