Overview
A faint-hearted university student from a middle class family learns about the secrets of each member of his family and shares his impressions about such domestic scenes: the relationship his younger sister in high school is having with a group of bad kids; the romantic relationships and sales results of his older brother, who is a sales representative; the hatred of his father, who has a managerial position and has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, toward his wife; and the loneliness of his mother, who is a stay-at-home wife. While presenting the intense struggles of the family, this series hints at the possibility of restoration through the true picture of each of the family members and the perspective of the university student and second son who says: “My sister and my brother...they’re all doing their best to through life, it almost makes me feel sad.” The creator, Taichi Yamada, continued to depict the true picture of family life as he did in Sorezore no Aki in subsequent series in other series such as Kishibe no Arubamu (1977), Ensen Chizu (1979), and Soshun Sukecchi Bukku (1983). The theme throughout all of these series is sorezore (literally “each”), a word that is included in the title Sorezore no Aki. Eventually, the idea of exposure of an individual within the family was passed on to Heisei-era soap operas created by Hisashi Nozawa and others in the form of the autonomy of individuals. Taichi Yamada gained inspiration for the narration style from novels by Salinger. This style was later frequently used by Satoshi Kuramoto in series such as Zenryaku Ofukuro-sama (1975–76) and Kita no Kuni kara (1981–82).
