Overview
As a drama serial building on the true picture of family depicted in Sorezore no Aki, Kishibe no Arubamu projects social issues of the era onto the family. It determined the characteristics of soap operas aired in the late 1970s onwards. In a residential area along the Tama River in the outskirts of Tokyo, Kensaku Tajima, a department head at a trading company, lives a comfortable life in a house together with his homemaker wife Noriko, their daughter Ritsuko, who goes to university, and their son Shigeru, who is in high school. However, Kensaku often comes home drunk because his fiber machinery department is not doing well; Ritsuko is obsessed with English conversation lessons and rarely at home. Shigeru leads an easy life. So, Noriko often eats dinner alone after a busy day of housework. One day, the lonely Noriko gets a prank call that implicitly encourages her to cheat on her husband. Noriko has an affair, Kensaku’s company is on the brink of bankruptcy and conducts an illegal transaction, and Ritsuko has an abortion while dating a foreigner. Shigeru learns about these secrets and explodes, revealing everything to his family. As the family starts to fall apart as a consequence, a typhoon strikes, causing the Tama River to flood and sweep away their house. “What’s left other than this house?” “Those albums with a pretty public persona of ours and this house are what’s important!” The quarrel between Kensaku and Noriko that takes place in a house that is about to be washed away implicitly expresses the realities of the things that people have gained from the postwar democracy, their own house. The restoration of this broken family is left to the imagination of the viewers, but this question is one that continues to be addressed in subsequent series.
