- Overview
- Yohei Sugimoto and Etsuko Shimazu, two young members of a security company, get to know some elderly people living in an old folks’ home, following a security-related event. One day, however, those elderly people suddenly hijack a Tokyo Toden tram. Deputy Chief Yoshioka rushes to the scene. There, the hijackers spew out the loneliness and resentment of aging, claiming that they have been “abandoned” and “treated as a burden” in spite of all the hardships they have been through and everything they have done for society. In response, Yoshioka persuades them to stop: “All this does is tarnish your admirable past.” He expresses his determination for his own retirement age: “I’m ready for what’s to come two decades from now. The least I can say is I won’t do something like this.” After these words, he remains silent throughout. The episode asks a penetrating question ahead of its time to a rapidly aging society, through the many emotions of the elderly hijackers and Yoshioka’s silence.
