- Overview
- On March 31, 1963, a boy was kidnapped for ransom in Iriya-cho, Taito-ku, Tokyo. (He was later murdered.) This is what is commonly known as the “Yoshinobu-chan case.” The police conducted an open criminal investigation, broadcasting the voice of the kidnapper on TV and radio to gather information from the public. The use of media attracted much public attention to the case. It was one of the largest-scale investigations in postwar Japan. Sengo Saidai no Yukai Yoshinobu-chan Jiken documents the investigation in its entirety. It aired on the Saturday Wide Theater slot. Won the 34th ACA National Arts Festival Excellence Award and the New Artist Award of the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts. After a disclaimer to the effect that the program has no intention to slander or denounce any actual, specific individual, the show extensively documents the unfolding of the case, the background and life of the kidnapper, Tamotsu Kohara, how Kohara carried out the kidnapping, and the nature of the investigation, based on a book by Yasuharu Honda. There you can see the creators’ hope that a similar tragedy would never occur again. Shigeru Izumiya, who was up to then known as a folk singer, played Kohara, and his bloodcurdling performance helped him solidify his position as an actor.
