- The story revolves around two families living along the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line: a family of an elite banker (four members) and another of an electronics store owner (three members). One day, the only son of the banker and the only daughter of the electronics shop owner disappear. Though being still in high school and bright, the two have come to have doubts about the prearranged life before them: to graduate from a top class university, join a large corporation, and get married once reaching a marriageable age. The two kids decide to leave their families and live together in order to avoid that prearranged path in life. They ask their parents: “Are you really satisfied with your way of life? Are you happy?” This forces the parents to question themselves about their own lives, including the fact that the fathers have been immersed in work, while the mothers have accepted this and felt loneliness. And as if that was not enough, the teenage couple becomes pregnant, and the banker’s elderly father commits suicide. These incidents force the kids and their respective parents to reflect on their way of life and what a family should be. Kishibe no Arubamu, aired two years earlier in 1977, left it to the viewers to imagine what would become of the family after its disintegration. Ensen Chizu also leaves it up to the viewers to decide how things ended up for the two families.
