Overview
Kuniko Mukoda’s script brings back to life in a modern context the “women who by chance throw themselves into an extraordinary world,” which appear in the world of Ihara Saikaku. The TV drama won the National Arts Festival Excellence Award. Two women who live next door to each other in a cheap, small apartment in the corner of town. One is Sachiko, a 28-year-old ordinary housewife. The other is Mineko, who is 10 years older and runs a bar. It’s not that Sachiko is struggling financially, but she earns a bit of income during the day from sewing work she does at home. One day during her work, she hears her next door neighbor Mineko making love with a man she has brought into her house. Sachiko secretly listens over the wall with a mixed feeling of interest and disgust. Today’s man sounds different from those before him. Sachiko falls in love with the man’s voice. At the same time, Sachiko feels that the woman next door has made her recognize her own lack of sexual activity. Sachiko, by chance, has a one-night stand with the man, whose name is Asada. In love with Asada, Sachiko follows him to New York where he has gone to study painting. What happens when an ordinary married woman sets foot in a world of sexual freedom? Mukoda’s script zooms in on the sexual adventure and psychology of a married woman. Mukoda’s inspiration was as follows: “Next to women who lived a dramatic life, like those in Ihara Saikaku’s Five Women Who Loved Love, must have lived women who wanted to live dramatically but led an ordinary life.”
