- Overview
- It is a TV drama adaptation of the work by Seiko Yoshinaga that won the Excellence Award in the 7th Yomiuri Women’s Human Documentary Award Kanebo Special. Written by Shinichi Ichikawa and directed by Yoshiko Sembon, it aired on the Kanebo Human Special slot. Themed around Japanese orphans left behind in China, the TV drama depicts the extreme tragedy experienced by Japanese citizens left behind in the Chinese continent after the World War II based on historical facts and in a grand scale. It resonates with generations that did not experience the war, too. Yoshiko Ishiwatari left her daughter behind in the Chinese continent. She learns from TV that Japanese orphans who were left behind in China are scheduled to visit Japan. One of the visitors is Mika Son, Yoshiko’s daughter who she left behind in Manchuria. Mika soon arrives in Japan. But Yoshiko does not have the courage to tell Mika she is her mother. This is because she already has a new family, and she does not want to trouble her current husband. Yoshiko asks her neighbor Kumiko Aizawa, who is a housewife, to look into the circumstances. Not long after, Mika meets Yoshiko and instinctively senses that she is her mother. But Yoshiko leaves the scene as if to run away. Yoshiko ultimately acknowledges that Mika is her daughter and begins to share the story of what happened in China...
