She was born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1924. After graduating from Hamamatsu Municipal Girls’ High School (now Hamamatsu Municipal High School), she entered Jissen Women’s Vocational School in Tokyo and lived with her elder brother, the film director Keisuke Kinoshita, at his home in Kamata. It was there that she met the cinematographer Hiroyuki Kusuda, whom she later married. Her career as a screenwriter began when she wrote a screenplay that was recognized by her brother, leading to her professional debut. Initially, she focused on writing screenplays for films. She is best known for such film screenplays as Kono Hiroi Sora no Dokoka ni (Somewhere under the Broad Sky, 1954), Yūyakegumo (Sunset Clouds, 1956), Namida (Tears, 1956), and Shiokari Tōge (Shiokari Pass, 1973). Later she started writing television scripts. She joined Keisuke Kinoshita Productions in 1965 and went freelance in 1970. In 1993, she received the 17th Scenario Achievement Award. Her notable television scripts include Yorokobi mo Kanashimi mo Ikutoshitsuki (Times of Joy and Sorrow, 1965, TBS), Hyōten (Freezing Point, 1966, NET [now TV Asahi]), Sannin no Haha (Three Mothers, 1968–1969, TBS), Tōfu-ya no Shiki (Four Seasons of a Tofu Shop, 1969–1970, ABC), Kita no Kazoku (The Northern Family, 1973–1974, NHK), and Kazoku Awase (Family Reunion, 1974–1975, TBS). She died in December 2013 at the age of 89.
