Hoshikawa Seiji

He was born in Tokyo in 1921. From a young age, he frequented movie theaters in Asakusa, spending his days immersed in the world of cinema. While a student at the former Yamagata High School, he battled illness for over ten years. Later, he persistently sent scripts to leading industry figures, eventually leading to contracts with major studios, such as Daiei and Nikkatsu, after he reached the age of thirty. He wrote screenplays for a wide variety of popular entertainment films, focusing primarily on period dramas and yakuza stories (ninkyō-mono). His credits include the Kenji Misumi-directed Shinsengumi Shimatsuki (Shinsengumi Chronicles: I Want to Die a Samurai), starring Raizo Ichikawa, Bodo (Riot), and Rikugun Nakano Gakkō (The School of Spies), as well as the series Zatōichi (Zatoichi the Fugitive) and Nemuri Kyoshirō (Nemuri Kyoshiro the Swordsman). He also wrote for television, scripting series such as Sanbiki no Samurai (The Three Outlaw Samurai, 1966–1967, Fuji TV), Nemuri Kyōshirō (1967, Fuji TV), and Sengoku Mushuku (1967–1968, Yomiuri TV). Waga Chichi Hokusai (My Father Hokusai, 1970, MBS) won the Excellence Award at the National Arts Festival and the Grand Prix at the Prix Italia. He was also active as a novelist, and his works Kodenshō won the 102nd Naoki Prize. He became the oldest person to be awarded the Naoki Prize, receiving the honor at 68 years and two months of age. He died in July 2008 at the age of 86.
