He was born into a merchant family who lived on the pilgrimage route. The war ended while he was attending the Naval Academy; he witnessed the devastation of Hiroshima. After graduating from university, he worked as a reporter for an ikebana (flower arrangement) trade journal before transitioning to broadcast writing, eventually making his debut as a television scriptwriter in 1961. He then penned several major hits, including Tenka Gomen (The License of Heaven) and Hissatsu Shigoto-nin (The Specialized Assassins), before moving to works like Yumechiyo Nikki (Yumechiyo’s Diary), which centered on a protagonist prenatally exposed to radiation, and the Hana-henro (The Floral Pilgrimage) series, based on his own upbringing. He is renowned for his writing skills, where he interweaves fact and fiction while moving effortlessly between serious and lighthearted themes. He won the Best Drama Programme Script and the International Critics Awards at the Monte Carlo Television Festival for Shura no Tabi Shite (All the Way Home). He received the Kuniko Mukoda Award and the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize for Hana-henro: Kaze no Showa Nikki (The Floral Pilgrimage: Showa Diary), and his Yumechiyo’s Diary trilogy won numerous awards, including Excellent Program in the Television Award and the Hoso Bunka Foundation (HBF) Prize. As a novelist, he won the Nitta Jiro Prize for his novel Hana Nikki: Showa Ikebana Sengokushi (Hanna Diary: The History of Fierce Competition in the Japanese Art of Flower Arrangement during the Showa Period). His autobiographical novel Downtown Heroes, which was nominated for the Naoki Prize, was made into a film (English title: Hope and Pain) and directed by Yoji Yamada. He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal in 1994 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, Fourth Class, in 2000. He died in 2017 at the age of 88.
