- Profile
- She was born in Setagaya, Tokyo, in 1929. She graduated from the Department of Japanese Language and Literature of Jissen Women’s Vocational School (now Jissen Women’s University). During her childhood, her family frequently relocated across Japan due to her father’s work. After graduating from school, she joined Zaisei Bunkasha as the president’s secretary. She subsequently joined the publisher Ondorisha, where she served as an editor for the magazine Eiga Story (Film Story). She expanded her network within the film industry, including figures such as Kazuko Komori. She studied scriptwriting under Saburō Ichikawa. In 1960, she went freelance as a scriptwriter, essayist, and novelist. She crafted distinctive dramas, such as Fuyu no Undokai (The Winter Sports Day) and A-un, demonstrating her keen observations of human nature. To advocate for better working conditions for television and radio writers, she co-founded the writers’ group SHP with Hiroshi Matsuki, Atsundo Kubota, Yukio Tsuda, and others. She won the Galaxy Award Selection Prize in 1979 for Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), Ashura no Gotoku (Like Asura), and A-Un. In 1980, she also won the Naoki Prize for her collection of short stories: Hana no Namae (The Name of the Flower), Kawauso (The Otter), and Inugoya (The Doghouse). In 1981, she died at the age of 52 in a plane crash while on a tour of Taiwan. After her death, the Kuniko Mukoda Award was established in honor of her achievements.
