Kuramoto So

Profile
He was born in Tokyo in 1935. He graduated from the University of Tokyo’s Department of Aesthetics in the Faculty of Letters. He joined Nippon Broadcasting System in 1959. In addition to working as a director and producer, he also worked as a scriptwriter. In 1963, he went freelance and continued to write prolifically. In 1977, he relocated to Furano, Hokkaido. The town served as the setting for the drama series Kita no Kuni kara (From the North Country), which went on to air for 21 years. From 1984 to 2010, he led Furano Juku (Furano Natural Studio), which was dedicated to training scriptwriters and young actors. In 1986, he made his directorial debut with the film Tokei—Adieu l’hiver (Clockwork—Goodbye Winter). In 2017, he wrote the senior-oriented drama Yasuragi no Sato (Peaceful Village), which captured the public’s attention with its cast of silver screen stars. He received the Golden Arrow Award, the Mainichi Art Award, and the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize for Zenryaku Ofukuro-sama (Dear Mother) in 1976, the Grand Prize at the National Arts Festival, the Grand Prix of the ATP Award, and the Excellent Program of the Television Award for Nami no Bon (Lanterns on Blue Waters) in 1983, and the Kuniko Mukoda Award for From the Kitano Kuni kara 2002 Yuigon (North Country: 2002—Testament) in 2002. He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2000 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2010.
